Godless Billboard Greets Duluth Motorists
“Don’t believe in God? You are not alone.”
These words appear on a billboard that can be read by motorists driving from downtown to the Miller Hill Mall on Central Entrance (across from McDonald’s). It stands on the right-hand side to those traveling north. The 11 x 24 foot billboard features an image of blue sky and clouds with the words superimposed over. It was placed by Lake Superior Freethinkers, a local group organized in 1997.
This billboard is part of a national campaign designed to reach those who don’t believe in a god. The Duluth billboard also exists to raise public awareness of their existence in the Duluth-Superior area.
Fred Edwords, national director of the United Coalition of Reason and organizer of the national campaign said, “Our point is to reach out to the millions of humanists, atheists and agnostics living in the United States. Such non-theists sometimes don’t realize there’s a community for them because they’re inundated with religious messages at every turn. Hence we hope this message will serve as a beacon and let them know they aren’t alone.”
Reaching out to the like minded isn’t the only goal of the effort: “We want people to know you can be good without God,” said Bill van Druten, founder of Lake Superior Freethinkers. “We’re your friends, neighbors and family members. We contribute to our communities and are true to our values.”
The billboard will remain up for four weeks.
